This is a common breeder protocol, not a prescription. Timing, products, and extras like lepto, bordetella, or FeLV vary by region and by vet, and maternal antibodies are why puppies need a full series instead of one shot. Confirm your litter's schedule with your veterinarian.

The Full Version Lives in BreederBuddy

Set the schedule once, apply it to every litter

A schedule on paper still depends on you remembering it. In BreederBuddy, the litter's care plan dates itself, reminds you, and becomes the health record buyers take home.

Care schedule templates

Define tasks by day offset (Day 14 deworming, Day 42 first vaccine) once, then apply the template to any litter in one click. Everything auto-dates from the whelp date onto your calendar.

Real vaccine records

Each dose logs with product name and lot number on the puppy's record, and booster and deworming reminders fire automatically so nothing slips.

Health report PDF

One click generates a professional health report per puppy: vaccinations, deworming, vet visits, and test results, ready for the go-home folder.

FAQs

Common questions about puppy vaccine schedules

What shots do puppies need before going home?

By 8-week go-home, a typical protocol has each puppy dewormed at 2, 4, and 6 weeks, given its first DHPP combo vaccine around 6 weeks, and examined by a vet with a written health record. Rabies is not given before 12 weeks; it lands with the buyer's vet later, per local law.

Why do puppies need a series of shots instead of one?

Maternal antibodies from mom's milk protect young puppies but also neutralize vaccines unpredictably. Since those antibodies fade at different ages in different puppies, vets vaccinate every 3 to 4 weeks until about 16 weeks so no puppy is left with a gap in protection.

What is the vaccine schedule for kittens?

FVRCP (the feline distemper combo) at roughly 6, 9, and 12 weeks, with deworming from 2 weeks, FeLV testing per your vet, and rabies from 12 to 16 weeks per local law. Because the series runs later, catteries typically hold kittens until 12 to 14 weeks, so buyers take home a nearly fully vaccinated kitten.

Who handles vaccines after the puppy goes home?

The buyer's vet continues the series, typically boosters around 9, 12, and 16 weeks plus rabies. Send every puppy home with a written record of exact dates, products, and lot numbers so the new vet can pick up the schedule without guessing.

Can BreederBuddy manage vaccine schedules for a whole litter?

Yes. Build a care schedule template once (Day 14 deworming, Day 42 first vaccine, and so on) and apply it to any litter in one click; every task is auto-dated from the whelp date and lands on your calendar. Individual vaccinations log with product and lot number, booster reminders fire automatically, and a one-click health report PDF goes home with each puppy. See health records
