Progesterone Timing

Time the Breeding From Her Numbers, Not the Calendar

Log every progesterone draw and BreederBuddy charts the rise, marks the LH surge and ovulation, and computes the breeding window for natural, fresh AI, frozen, and surgical breedings.

Progesterone timing chart for a dog breeding cycle in BreederBuddy

Sound familiar?

A missed ovulation costs a whole season. Most breeders are still timing it by hand.

  • Progesterone results scattered across vet emails, texts, and a notebook page
  • Doing ovulation-plus-two math in your head while coordinating a stud three states away
  • Frozen semen thawed on the wrong day because the window was calculated from a guess
  • No cycle history, so every season starts from zero instead of from her pattern

Her actual curve, with the surge and ovulation marked as the results come in

Multi-Point Progesterone Charting

Every draw on one curve, not scattered across vet invoices

Log each progesterone test on the heat cycle as the results come in (date and ng/mL) and BreederBuddy plots the rise for you. The LH surge marker sits at roughly 2 to 3 ng/mL and the ovulation line at roughly 5 ng/mL, so one glance tells you where she is in the cycle.

  • Unlimited draws per cycle, charted in order with the trend visible
  • Reference markers for the LH surge (~2-3 ng/mL) and ovulation (~5 ng/mL) built into the chart
  • Ovulation day identified from her numbers, not a calendar guess
  • Every test stays on her cycle history, so next season starts with real data

Breeding Windows By Breeding Type

Fresh, frozen, or surgical: the right window, computed for you

Fertilization timing is different math depending on how you breed. Once ovulation is identified, BreederBuddy shows both windows on the cycle: natural or fresh AI at ovulation plus 2 to 3 days, and frozen or surgical AI at ovulation plus 3 to 4 days. No sticky-note arithmetic during the most expensive week of your season.

  • Natural / fresh AI window: ovulation +2 to +3 days
  • Frozen semen / surgical AI window: ovulation +3 to +4 days
  • Windows appear on the cycle timeline the moment ovulation is marked
  • Bring your repro vet one clean chart instead of a stack of results

Heat Cycle Forecasting

Know the season is coming before it starts

BreederBuddy learns each female's average interval from her recorded history and forecasts her next 3 to 4 heat cycles. That means progesterone testing, stud arrangements, and your own calendar get planned weeks ahead instead of scrambled when she suddenly comes in.

  • Next 3-4 cycles forecast per female from her own interval history
  • Progress bar on her profile showing % progress toward the next predicted heat
  • Visual litter planner timeline with every female side by side
  • Fertile window highlighted per cycle with customizable day offsets

From ovulation math to the whelping box, one connected record

From Breeding To Whelping Box

The same records carry her through to whelping day

Timing the breeding is half the story. Log a breeding and BreederBuddy auto-creates pregnancy check and due date reminders. As the due date approaches, Whelping Watch learns her baseline temperature, flags the pre-labor drop below 99°F, and predicts the whelping window within 24 hours.

  • Pregnancy check and due date reminders created the moment you log the breeding
  • Whelping Watch temperature tracking with learned baseline per dam
  • Pre-labor temperature drop flagged automatically
  • Whelping window predicted within 24 hours

We used Kenny to build a custom website and he did an amazing job! In addition to the care he took to build the site he also set aside time to meet with me to make any changes or adjustments as well as to teach me the ropes.

Kenny built a site for me, even though I am a cat breeder, and the process was absolutely phenomenal. The result was just what I was hoping for when I went to him, and it integrates so well with his breeder software. If you want a great site at an affordable cost, choose Kenny to build it.

FAQs

Progesterone timing questions, answered

Does BreederBuddy track progesterone tests?

Yes. Log every draw on the heat cycle (test date and ng/mL value) and BreederBuddy charts the rise, marks the LH surge and ovulation on the curve, and computes the breeding windows from her actual numbers. It is multi-point timing, not a single-value note field.

What progesterone level means my dog is ovulating?

The widely used markers are the LH surge at roughly 2 to 3 ng/mL and ovulation at roughly 5 ng/mL. Eggs then need about 2 more days to mature before they can be fertilized. BreederBuddy marks both points on the chart as your draws come in, so you see where she is in the cycle instead of interpreting raw numbers by hand.

How many progesterone tests does a breeding usually take?

Most breedings take 2 to 4 draws. A common approach starts testing around day 5 to 7 of the cycle, then repeats every 1 to 3 days depending on how fast the number is rising. Because BreederBuddy charts each draw on the cycle, you and your vet can see the slope and decide when the next test is actually worth the money.

When should I breed after ovulation with fresh vs frozen semen?

Natural breedings and fresh AI are typically timed 2 to 3 days after ovulation. Frozen semen and surgical AI have a shorter fertile life and are typically timed 3 to 4 days after ovulation. Once ovulation is identified on the chart, BreederBuddy shows both windows on the cycle so nothing is mentally recalculated on the fly.

Can BreederBuddy predict when my female will come into heat?

Yes. BreederBuddy learns each female's average interval from her recorded history and forecasts her next 3 to 4 cycles, so you can book progesterone testing and stud arrangements before the season starts. Try the free heat cycle calculator

Does this work for reproductive vet visits?

Breeders use the chart to bring their repro vet a clean history: every draw, dated, on one curve, with the cycle timeline behind it. You can also export and share records, so the vet sees the same numbers you do.
