The litter

Keeper puppies still cost money but bring in no sale.

Litter expenses

Per-puppy expenses (applied to every puppy, kept ones included)

Your time

Whelping watch, cleaning, socializing, buyer emails. 60 to 100+ hours is common.

Set to 0 to leave labor out.

The bottom line

$16,600 net before your labor

Counting your 80 hours at $15/hr, the litter nets $15,400.

Gross revenue (8 sold × $2,500)$20,000
Litter expenses$1,800
Per-puppy expenses (8 × $200)$1,600
Total expenses$3,400
Net per puppy sold$2,075
Your labor (80 hrs × $15)$1,200
Net after labor$15,400

The numbers most breeders forget: the emergency c-section that wipes out a litter's profit, health testing on the parents, equipment that wears out, and their own hours. If the math looks thin, the fix is usually pricing, not cutting corners. Try the puppy pricing calculator.

The Full Version Lives in BreederBuddy

Know your numbers without the spreadsheet

This calculator works on estimates. BreederBuddy tracks the real thing: expenses logged against each litter as they happen, sales flowing in from invoices, and profit that computes itself.

Per-litter expense allocation

Log expenses as they happen and allocate them to a litter. Every litter shows its true cost basis, and income data stays restricted to the account owner.

Net profit per litter

Sales from invoices and Stripe payments meet expenses on the same record, so each litter's net profit is a number you look up, not a project you dread.

A real income report

Gross sales, processing fees, taxes by rate, and net income in one report, exportable to CSV for your accountant. Other income (stud fees, affiliate commissions) rolls in too.

FAQs

Common questions about litter profitability

How much profit does a litter of puppies make?

The honest answer: less than the gross suggests, and sometimes nothing. Revenue is price times puppies sold, but stud fees, progesterone testing, prenatal care, whelping supplies, vaccines, microchips, food, and marketing routinely consume thousands per litter, and one emergency c-section can erase the rest. Well-run programs are profitable; programs that never do this math usually are not.

What expenses do breeders most often forget?

Their own labor (often 60 to 100+ hours per litter), an emergency reserve for a c-section or sick puppy, health testing on the parents, equipment wear, guarantee claims, and the cost of keeper puppies that bring in no sale. Counting only food and vaccines makes every litter look profitable on paper.

Is breeding dogs profitable as a business?

It can be, with honest accounting, realistic pricing, and healthy dogs, but margins are thinner than outsiders assume. The breeders who do well know their per-litter numbers, price to cover real costs including their time, and reinvest in health testing and quality breeding stock.

Does BreederBuddy track litter profit automatically?

Yes. Expenses log with per-litter allocation, sales flow in from invoices and Stripe payments, and BreederBuddy shows net profit per litter without a spreadsheet. The income report combines gross sales, fees, and taxes into a clean year-end picture, exportable to CSV for your accountant. See reporting
