We stress-test at 6 in case the litter runs small.

Set to 0 to price without labor.

What the litter should earn beyond costs and labor. This funds health testing, equipment, and the next breeding.

Suggested price per puppy

$975

Covers costs, your labor, and your $2,000 target across 8 puppies, rounded up to the nearest $25.

Break-even price (costs only, 8 puppies)$563
Your labor (80 hrs × $15)$1,200
Total to cover$7,700
Suggested price at 8 puppies$975

Small-litter check

Litters don't always cooperate. If only 6 puppies arrive, your $975 price nets $150 after costs and labor. To fully hit your target even with a small litter, you'd need $1,300 per puppy. Most breeders price somewhere between the two.

Cost math sets your floor; the market sets your ceiling. Health testing, titles, rare colors, and a strong reputation all move real-world prices. If your break-even is above what your market pays, revisit expenses with the litter profitability calculator before dropping your price.

FAQs

Common questions about pricing puppies

How much should I charge for a puppy?

Start from your floor: total litter costs (plus your labor and a profit target) divided by a conservative litter size. Then look at your market: what health-tested litters of your breed actually sell for in your region. Price at or above your floor and within market range. If the floor sits above the market, the fix is your cost structure or your program's positioning, not hope.

Why do well-bred puppies cost so much?

Because the costs are front-loaded and invisible: health testing on both parents, stud fees, progesterone timing, prenatal vet care, quality food, vaccines, microchips, and dozens of hours of socialization before a buyer ever visits. A cheap puppy usually means someone skipped those steps.

Should every puppy in a litter be the same price?

Many breeders keep one price per litter for simplicity and fairness. Others price by coat color, markings, or show potential where demand genuinely differs. Whichever you choose, put it in writing before deposits, and track what actually sells: real sales data beats instinct.

Should I underprice to sell puppies faster?

Usually not. Educated buyers treat a too-low price as a red flag, and underpricing attracts impulse buyers, the group most likely to return a puppy. If interest is thin, the higher-leverage fixes are better buyer reach, better presentation of your health testing, and patience.

Can BreederBuddy show what my puppies actually sell for?

Yes. Every puppy's sale price, deposit, and balance lives on its record, and the Sales by Puppy Traits report shows how price varies by color, sex, and coat across your history, so next litter's pricing is based on your own data. See sales reports
