Edit Your Website

Video walkthrough: Watch on Loom (link coming soon)

Tell Buddy what you’d like changed on your website, in your own words, and it makes the change for you, no web designer needed. You see every change in plain words before anything happens, with your real site right beside the chat, and you can undo any change.

What You Can Do Here

  • Change your site by describing what you want in plain words
  • See every change before it happens, and undo it, even days later
  • Reword, hide or relink any heading, label or button
  • Change your colors, fonts, logo and menu, and the size and look of things like prices and buttons
  • Add a news bar, photos, pages, FAQs, reviews, blog posts, a live puppy cam or a map
  • Update puppy status and prices, dog bios and litter details, right on your records
  • Pick which form your Apply buttons open, and change its questions
  • Click any part of your site to edit it yourself, or retype words right on the page

How It Works

  1. In the left menu, under Your Online Presence, open Website and click Edit your website. Your site opens in the middle of the page, with Buddy on the left.
  2. Type what you’d like to change in the box at the bottom, like “Add a FAQ about how our deposits work.” To send photos, click Add photos or drag them onto the chat.
  3. Press Enter, or click Send. Buddy looks over your site. If it isn’t sure what you mean, it asks one quick question with answers you can tap.
  4. Buddy shows a Changes to make card with one plain line for each change. Nothing on your site has changed yet.
  5. If the card has tick boxes (for example, to make a dog’s profile public or mark puppies reserved), tick each one. Make these changes works once they’re all ticked.
  6. Click Make these changes. The card says Live on your site, and your site in the middle updates. Not ready? Click Not now instead.
  7. Changed your mind later? Click Undo on the card, and the change comes off your site. Or just ask, like “undo the colors from Thursday.”
Not sure where to start? A new conversation shows a few ideas under Try one of these. Click one to put it in the message box, or click More ideas for others. You can also ask Buddy “what can you change on my site?” You’ll see Edit your website in the menu once you have a website with BreederBuddy. Don’t have one yet? See Get a Breeder Website.

Other Ways to Open It

  • My Website: click Edit your website at the top of My Website.
  • Your Dashboard: click Edit your website on the Your website card. Or, in the Buddy box at the top of your Dashboard, click one of the ideas next to On your website. The editor opens with that idea already sent. Click the arrows button next to the ideas for more.
  • Buddy, anywhere in the app: type a website change in the Buddy box on your Dashboard, or press Ctrl+K (Cmd+K on a Mac) on any page and ask. Buddy shows a Make this change in your website editor card. Click Open the website editor, and your request is already sent when it opens.

Finding Your Way Around

  • Ask Buddy and Edit by hand, at the top of the left panel, switch between the chat and your site’s fields.
  • The page menu at the top shows another page of your site: Home, About, Parents, Litters, Pricing, FAQs, Reviews or Contact.
  • The screen size buttons show how your site looks on a phone, tablet, laptop or wide screen.
  • Live site, at the top right, opens your real website in a new tab.
  • On a phone, the Buddy, By hand and Your site buttons at the top switch between the chat, the fields and your site.

Pointing at What You Mean

On a template site, Buddy can tell which part you mean:
  • Click any part of your site. A Selected: tag with its name shows above the message box, so Buddy knows which part you mean. Then type something like “make this bigger” and send it. Click the X on the tag to clear it.
  • On a computer, Buddy also sees which part of the page you’re looking at and the words or photo your mouse last rested on. So “change this to …” works without clicking.
  • Each line on the card says what’s changing and where, so a wrong guess is easy to catch before you click Make these changes.

Editing by Hand

On a template site, you can also make changes yourself on the same page.
  1. Click Edit by hand at the top of the left panel.
  2. Click any part of your site, or pick it from the list under On this page. Its fields open beside your site.
  3. Make your changes. You can also click words right on your site and retype them there. Click away when you’re done, or press Enter at the end of a heading. Esc puts the words back.
  4. Your edits save to a draft as you go, and the top of the page says Changes not live yet.
  5. Click Put changes live when you’re ready, or Throw away to drop your edits.
Buddy’s changes go live as soon as you click Make these changes, and they’re copied into your draft too, so putting your draft live keeps them. To hand a part of your site to Buddy instead, click Ask Buddy about this above its fields.

What Buddy Can Change

Here’s what Buddy can change on a template site. Ask the way you’d say it to a friend: Buddy only uses photos you send in the chat or ones already on your site, never stock photos. It uses your own words where it can, and it won’t invent reviews, health claims, prices or dates. To collect more real reviews, see Google Reviews & Referrals.

Headings, Buttons and the News Bar

  • Buddy can change the words of any heading, small label or button your template shows, hide one, or point a button at another page or an outside link. This works on every template.
  • The news bar is one short line across the top of every page, with one link at most. It comes in your accent color, dark, light, or red for urgent news. Use it for news that’s true right now, and ask Buddy to take it down when it isn’t.
  • People call the big photo at the top of the home page “the banner” too. If Buddy can’t tell which one you mean, it asks.
  • Buddy keeps your words easy to read. If a color would make text hard to read, it suggests a close shade that works.
  • Ask for “a fancier font” or “something more modern”, and Buddy offers two or three to pick from.
  • For a new logo or tab icon, send the photo in the chat. Your logo is also your account logo, so it changes on your invoices and contracts too.
  • Switching to a different template changes your layout and sections, so the card asks you to confirm it first.
  • If your site wears a theme made just for your program (custom branding), its colors, fonts and menu are built into it, so Buddy sends those changes to Kenny instead.

Your Menu

  • Buddy can rename, reorder, hide or show menu items, add your own links (your Etsy shop, your application) and group pages under a dropdown. Taking a page out of the menu keeps the page itself.
  • Contact is always the button at the end of the menu.
  • Extra pages sit in the Info dropdown until you ask Buddy to put them somewhere else.
  • A dropdown holds pages your site already has, one level deep. Dropdowns don’t show on the Field & Sport and Cattery templates yet.

Your Forms

  • Buddy can pick which form your Apply buttons and Application page open, put a form on your Contact page, add, reword or remove questions, make a question required, and rename a form.
  • Removing a question only stops asking it. Past answers stay on the applications you already have. You confirm removals on the card.
  • First Name, Last Name, Email and Phone Number stay as they are, because they’re how an application becomes a contact.
  • Moving questions, “show this field only when…” rules, section breaks, the submit button and the form’s color are done in the form builder, under Applications. To make a brand new form, click Add Application Form there, then ask Buddy to put it on your site.

Blog Posts

  • Buddy writes in your voice from what you tell it, and asks for facts like dates, names or how many puppies rather than guessing.
  • Send photos in the chat for the cover and the post.
  • Buddy makes a draft unless you say “publish it”, “post it” or “schedule it for Friday”. Drafts wait on the Posts tab of My Website. Publishing asks you to tick a Yes on the card.
  • Unpublishing keeps the post as a draft. To delete a post, use the Posts tab.

Going Back to Earlier Changes

Every change Buddy makes has an Undo button on its card. You can also just ask, in any conversation:
  1. Type something like “undo the colors from Thursday” or “what did we change this month?”
  2. Buddy finds the changes you mean and names them back to you. If a few could fit, it asks which.
  3. A card lists each change it puts back. Click Make these changes.
  • If something was changed again since, that part stays as it is, and Buddy tells you first.
  • Click Undo on that card to bring the changes back.
  • This works for changes Buddy made. Edits you made by hand aren’t kept this way, so ask Buddy to change those back directly.

Your Dogs and Litters Come From Your Records

Buddy never types a dog’s details into a page. Your dogs, litters and puppies show on your site from your records, the same way they always do:
  • A dog or litter shows only when its record is Public. Buddy can make it public for you, and you tick the box on the card to confirm.
  • The Parents page lists dogs whose Type is Active Breeding Dog or Retired. A Pet / Other dog never lists there. Buddy can change a dog’s type, and you confirm that on the card too.
  • Puppies show through their litter, so the litter has to be public as well.
  • Archived dogs and litters stay off your site.
Buddy can also change these on your records for you: a dog’s or puppy’s bio, call name, registered name and color, a puppy’s status (Available, Reserved, Retained or Sold) and price, and a litter’s name and description. The change shows in the app too, and you confirm status and price changes on the card.
  • Prices show on your site only when prices are switched on for puppies or dogs. Buddy can switch them on in the same change.
  • Marking a puppy Reserved doesn’t add the buyer. To link the buyer, use Reserve for a buyer on the puppy’s card in the app.
  • A litter’s status and dates, a dog’s photos, sex and breed, and archiving are still done in the app.
Ask “Why isn’t Bauer showing?” and Buddy tells you why, then offers a fix. To change these yourself, use Content Manager. See Your Website & Online Presence for more on what shows.

What Goes to Kenny

Most changes go live the moment you click Make these changes. Two kinds go to Kenny, our founder, instead:
  • Jobs that need new code, like a brand new kind of section. Buddy writes these up as a Request for Kenny. The card says Sent to Kenny, your list says With Kenny, and the card changes to Kenny did this when it’s done.
  • Changes that get a quick check first: links that look risky (like shortened links, file downloads or look-alike payment pages) and very big changes made all at once. The card says Kenny reviews changes like this first, and its button says Send to Kenny. You’ll see Waiting for Kenny’s review, then Approved and live, or Kenny declined this with his note.
Ordinary links, like your vet, your breed club or your social pages, go live like any other change.

Your Conversations

  • Click History at the top of the chat to see Your conversations, grouped into Today, Yesterday, This week and Earlier. Click one to open it.
  • Click New to start a fresh conversation.
  • Come back within a couple of hours and Buddy reopens the conversation you were in. After that you start fresh, and your recent conversations show under Pick up where you left off, along with anything still to do.
  • Sent a list of changes in one message? Buddy splits it into Your list at the top of the chat and marks each one To do, Question for you, Ready to review, Done, With Kenny or Can’t do this yet.
  • Give Buddy a rule for your site, like “never put photos of my kids on the site,” and it sticks to it in future conversations too.

Custom-Built (Signature) Sites

If BreederBuddy built your site by hand, Edit your website shows Buddy and your live site, without Edit by hand.
  • Buddy can change the words and photos your site was built to let you change, and which dogs and litters show.
  • After you click Make these changes, your site rebuilds with the change. It’s usually live in a minute or two. While it rebuilds, you can switch between Live site and Preview of the changes above your site.
  • To undo a change, ask Buddy to put it back. It can see the old wording.
  • Buddy can also write and fix blog posts, add or change the questions on your forms, and update dog, puppy and litter details, the same as on a template site.
  • The menu, colors, fonts and which form your buttons open are part of your site’s own code, so Buddy sends those to Kenny as a request.
  • Anything else goes to Kenny as a request.

Trials and Monthly Limits

  • On a trial, you get a small taste: a few changes and a set number of messages. Each click of Make these changes counts as one change, even when the card lists a few edits. Undoing a change doesn’t give it back, but asking Buddy to go back to an earlier change doesn’t use one up. When your changes are used up, the chat shows an Upgrade button.
  • What a trial covers: everyday changes like wording, headings and buttons, the news bar, colors and fonts, the size and look of things like prices and buttons, photos, pages, FAQs, reviews, your menu, forms, blog posts, home page sections, and your dogs and litters. Custom styling (like hover effects, animations or a whole new look), videos, live cams, maps and booking pages, and requests for Kenny are part of Pro.
  • On Pro, Buddy can do everything above, plus give your whole site a new look. Your website changes come from a monthly allowance. Buddy lets you know when you’re getting close, and it starts fresh on the 1st of each month.
  • On Signature, Buddy can also redesign the layout itself and take on truly custom work, so your site looks like a brand new custom site, and the monthly allowance is bigger.
  • On Standard, editing your website with Buddy isn’t included, and the chat shows an Upgrade button.

Beta and Sharing Feedback

Edit your website is new, so it carries a Beta badge. It’s still improving, and Kenny reads every note.
  1. Click Share feedback at the top of the page, or the share feedback link when you start a new conversation.
  2. Pick Loving it, Could be better, Something went wrong or I have an idea, and add a few words if you like.
  3. Click Send to Kenny. Your note goes to him along with the conversation you were in, so he can see what happened.

Key Terms

Tips & Common Questions

No. Buddy only suggests changes. Nothing on your site changes until you click Make these changes, and you can click Undo afterward, or ask Buddy to go back later. Edits you make by hand wait in your draft until you click Put changes live.
Yes. Prices, sale status, bios and litter descriptions live on your records, so Buddy changes the record itself. Your site and the app always match. Click Undo on the card to put the old value back.
On Pro, Buddy can give your whole site a new look: colors, fonts, sizes, spacing, borders, shadows, hover effects and gentle animations. Changing the layout itself, so your site looks like a brand new custom site instead of its template, is a Signature redesign. If you ask for one on Pro, Buddy tells you so and offers the new look instead.
Websites need JPG, PNG or WebP photos. iPhone photos are often HEIC, which websites can’t show. Convert them first, or on your iPhone go to Settings > Camera > Formats and choose Most Compatible for new photos. You can add up to 6 photos to one message.
No. Buddy edits websites BreederBuddy hosts: template sites and custom-built Signature sites. If your site is on WordPress, ask Kenny about moving it to BreederBuddy, and then Buddy can make your changes.
