Health Certifications

Video walkthrough: Watch on Loom (link coming soon)

Health Certifications is where you keep every health test result for every dog — OFA hips, elbows, eyes, cardiac, thyroid, PennHIP, Embark DNA, and anything else. The fastest way to add a record is to upload the OFA PDF and let BreederBuddy fill in the details for you. Color-coded badges make it obvious what’s valid, expiring, or expired.

What You Can Do Here

  • Upload an OFA PDF and have the test type, result, cert number, and dates filled in automatically
  • Add any health test manually — OFA, PennHIP, Embark, UC Davis, or your own custom tests
  • See at a glance which certs are valid, expiring soon, or expired
  • Group certs by category (orthopedic, eyes & cardiac, thyroid & dentition, DNA & genetics, reproductive / infectious)
  • Keep the original PDF attached as proof
  • View the full history of every test type per dog
  • Choose what buyers see on your website — the result, a link to the official record, and the certificate itself

How It Works

Finding the Tab

  1. Go to Dogs in the left menu and click the dog to open their profile.
  2. Under the Care & Evaluation group on the side, click the Certifications tab (shield icon). You’ll see the OFA & Health Testing page with every test type listed by category.

Importing an OFA PDF

  1. Click the PDF import button at the top right of the tab (next to Add Certification) and pick the OFA eCertificate file from your computer or phone.
  2. The button shows Reading… for a moment. Then the Review Imported Certification window opens with the details filled in:
    • Test type (Hips, Elbows, Eyes, Cardiac, Patellas, Thyroid, etc.)
    • Result (Excellent, Good, Fair, Normal, Pass, etc.)
    • OFA cert number
    • Test date
    • Expiry — Eyes/CAER auto-calculates 1 year from exam date; others you can set
    • Issuing organization (auto-detected as OFA)
  3. Review what was filled in. Anything BreederBuddy couldn’t read is listed under Some fields could not be auto-filled — please review, so fix those.
  4. Click Add certification. The cert appears under its category with a status badge, and the PDF is attached as proof.
Uploaded a DNA panel report instead? A DNA report holds dozens of results plus coat color genes, which one certification can’t. So BreederBuddy hands it to Buddy, who reads the whole report for that dog. Review and approve what Buddy found: each result is saved and the dog’s Genetics tab is filled in. Nothing is saved until you approve.

Adding a Cert Manually

If you have a test that isn’t from an OFA PDF — Embark DNA, PennHIP, a vet’s letter — click Add Certification at the top right (or the + next to a specific test, like PennHIP, to start with that test picked). Then fill in:
  • Issuing Organization (OFA, PennHIP, Embark, UC Davis, etc.)
  • Test / Certification (pick from the list or type your own)
  • Result / Grade
  • Certificate #
  • Date Tested and Expiry Date
  • Notes (any context worth keeping)
Click Add certification to save.

Showing Results on Your Website

At the bottom of the add/edit window, the Show this on my website box controls what buyers see on the dog’s page of your website:
  • Link to results — paste the Embark share link or OFA record page so buyers can check the official result. Leave it blank to just list the result.
  • Show the attached certificate on my website — tick this to let buyers view the certificate file itself.

Importing Health Paperwork with Buddy

Have a stack of vet records or several reports at once? Click Import with Buddy at the top of the dog’s profile and drop in up to 5 files. Buddy turns OFA and vet results into health records on that dog for you to review and approve before anything is saved.

Reading the Badges

Each cert shows a status badge:
  • Green check — valid
  • Yellow warning — expires within 30 days
  • Red X — expired
The current/latest result is shown by default; click ”+ 1 older entry” (or ”+ N older entries”) to see past records of the same test. Use the pencil (Edit) or trash (Delete) icons on any cert to change or remove it.

Categories

Certs are grouped automatically:
  • Orthopedic — OFA Hips, Elbows, Patellas, PennHIP
  • Eyes & Cardiac — OFA Eyes (CAER), OFA Cardiac
  • Thyroid & Dentition — OFA Thyroid, OFA Dentition
  • DNA & Genetics — Embark DNA, Wisdom Panel
  • Reproductive / Infectious — Brucellosis
  • Other — anything else, including custom tests

Tips & Common Questions

The parser handles most OFA eCertificates, but if a field is blank or wrong, just fix it before saving. The PDF is still attached so you have the source on file.
OFA eCertificates: Hips, Elbows, Eyes (CAER), Cardiac, Patellas, Thyroid, and a few others like Lungs and Brucellosis. The PDF import button fills in a certification from OFA certificates. Give it a DNA panel report and Buddy reads it instead, filling in the results and the Genetics tab after you approve. For PennHIP and other providers, add them with Add Certification, or drop the report into Import with Buddy on the dog’s profile.
Yes — results can be listed on the dog’s page of your website. In each cert’s Show this on my website box you can add a Link to results and choose whether to show the attached certificate.
In the Certificate # field of each certification on the dog’s Certifications tab. Importing the OFA PDF fills it in for you.
For one dog, yes: the Certifications tab lists every test grouped by category, with a badge showing whether each is valid, expiring, or expired. There isn’t a single list across all your dogs yet. You can request one on the Feedback page.
On the dog’s Health tab, not Certifications. That’s also where you print health records: click Export PDF Report. See Dogs.
Not automatically. The badge turns yellow within 30 days of expiry and red after, so you can spot expiring certs by opening the dog’s Certifications tab. If you want a nudge, add an event on your calendar for the retest date.
