# Genetics

> How to enter a dog's coat color genetics and DNA results (E, K, A, B, D, S, M loci, coat length, furnishings, curl), import an Embark, Paw Print Genetics or Wisdom Panel report, match lab results and allele labels to the dropdown options, and use the Genetics Forecast to test a hypothetical breeding pair and predict puppy colors, patterns, coat types, and projected COI before you breed.

# Genetics

Genetics is where you record each dog's coat color, pattern, and coat-trait results from their DNA panel. Save them once on the dog's profile and BreederBuddy reuses them in the **Genetics Forecast** to predict what a pairing could produce — so you can plan breedings and answer buyer questions with confidence.

***

## What You Can Do Here

* Record color, pattern, and coat-trait genotypes for each dog, locus by locus
* Mark each result as **Lab-tested**, **Inferred**, or **Unknown**
* Let Buddy fill in the genetics panel from an Embark report
* Forecast possible puppy coat colors, patterns, coat length, furnishings, curl, and merle for any sire and dam
* See the projected COI (inbreeding coefficient) for a pairing
* Download a forecast PDF or copy a buyer-friendly summary

Health testing (OFA, PennHIP, genetic disease panels) lives on the **Certifications** tab, not here. See [Health Certifications](https://breederbuddy.com/docs/features/core-animal-litter-management/health-certifications.md).

## How It Works

### Viewing a Dog's Genetics

1. Go to [**Dogs**](https://app.breederbuddy.com/animals) in the left menu and click the dog to open their profile.
2. Click the **Genetics** tab (in the **Breeding & Lineage** group on the side).
3. You'll see the dog's loci grouped by type. Each locus shows its **Genotype**, its **Confidence**, and what it **Affects**.

### Adding Genetics Information

1. On the dog's **Genetics** tab, click **Edit genetics** at the top right.
2. For each locus you have results for (for example **E locus**, **K locus**, **A locus**, **B locus**, **D locus**, **S locus**, **M locus**, **Coat length**, **Furnishings**, **Cu locus**), pick the **Genotype** from the dropdown. If you only know one copy, choose the "(one allele known)" option.
3. Set **Confidence** to **Lab-tested** for DNA results, or **Inferred** if you worked it out from color or offspring.
4. Leave anything you don't know as **Unknown**.
5. Click **Save genetics**. You'll see "Updated genetics." and the values now show on the tab.

**Have an Embark, Paw Print Genetics or Wisdom Panel report?** Instead of typing it in, click **Import Embark or DNA report** on this tab (or **Import with Buddy** at the top of the dog's profile) and drop in the PDF or a photo of it. Buddy turns it into a full genetics panel, logs the health results, and records the report's DNA-test COI, all for you to review and approve.

### Genetics Forecast

The Genetics Forecast lets you pick a sire and dam and see the possible outcomes for their puppies.

1. Go to [**Genetics Forecast**](https://app.breederbuddy.com/genetics/forecast) in the left menu (under **Tools & Analytics**). You can also click **Test Pairing with Dam** (or **Test Pairing with Sire**) on a dog's **Genetics** tab to start with that dog already filled in.
2. Under **Sire**, choose from **My dogs**, or switch to **Outside dogs** for a dog from your pedigree records. Each pick shows how many of their loci are saved.
3. Do the same under **Dam**.
4. Right under the parent pickers is the **Projected Offspring COI (Selected Pair)** card (marked **Beta**), followed by a **Parent genetics summary**.
5. Below those is the forecast: **Coat colors**, **Base pattern**, **White spotting**, **Coat length**, **Furnishings**, **Curl**, and **Merle**, each with a **Most likely** and a **Possible (less certain)** list. Further down, **Suggested tests** lists tests that would make the forecast more precise.
6. Click **Download PDF** in the top right to save the forecast, or use **Copy summary** under **Buyer-friendly summary** to paste a plain-language version into a message.

The Genetics Forecast is built for dog coat genetics, so it appears in the left menu for dog programs only.

## Key Terms

| Term | What It Means |
| - | - |
| Locus (plural: Loci) | A specific gene location that determines a color or trait (e.g., B locus controls brown/black) |
| Genotype | The two copies (alleles) a dog carries at a locus, as reported by the DNA lab |
| Lab-tested / Inferred | Whether a result came from a DNA test or was worked out from the dog's looks or offspring |
| DNA Panel | A lab test that identifies what alleles a dog carries at various gene locations |
| Carrier | A dog that carries a gene but doesn't express it visually; can still pass it to offspring |
| COI | Coefficient of inbreeding — how closely related the sire and dam are, based on their recorded pedigrees |

## Tips & Common Questions

> **Do I need to enter every locus?**
>
> No — enter what you have. Anything left as **Unknown** widens the forecast, so you'll see ranges instead of exact percentages, but partial data still gives you useful results.

> **Why does the forecast show ranges instead of exact percentages?**
>
> One or both parents have unknown or one-allele-known results for some loci. Open the forecast's **Why am I seeing ranges / extra possibilities?** section to see which loci, and check **Suggested tests** to see what would narrow it down.

> **My lab report uses different letters than the dropdown. Which option do I pick?**
>
> Pick the option with the same two alleles, in any order: a report saying "e/E" is **E/e** in the dropdown. For **Coat length** and **Furnishings**, the dropdown also shows Embark's shorthand next to each option, for example **L/L (Embark GG / ShSh)**, **F/F (Embark FF)**, **F/f (Embark FI)**, and **f/f (Embark II)**. If the report only gives one allele, choose the "(one allele known)" option, and leave anything you can't match as **Unknown**. Easiest of all: drop the Embark report into **Import with Buddy** and Buddy maps it for you.

> **Can I test a breeding pair before I breed them?**
>
> Yes, that's what the [**Genetics Forecast**](https://app.breederbuddy.com/genetics/forecast) is for. Pick any sire and dam, including outside dogs from your pedigrees, and you'll see likely puppy colors and coat types plus the projected COI. Nothing is saved or created, so try as many pairings as you like.

> **Where do I put OFA or genetic health test results?**
>
> On the dog's **Certifications** tab, not Genetics. The Genetics tab is only for coat color, pattern, and coat traits. Upload the OFA or lab PDF on **Certifications** and BreederBuddy reads it for you.

> **How do I share genetics with buyers?**
>
> Run the pairing in **Genetics Forecast**, then click **Copy summary** under **Buyer-friendly summary** and paste it into your message, or click **Download PDF** and send the file.

> **I don't see Genetics Forecast in my menu.**
>
> It only shows for dog programs. If you run a cattery, the Genetics tab on each profile still works, but the forecast isn't available.
