# Email Series and the Go-home Series

> Automatic emails timed to each puppy buyer's go-home date: welcome, what to buy, planning pickup day, the first-night check-in and paperwork. Start with the ready-made Go-home series, add buyers from a litter or waitlist, set each buyer's go-home date, and let BreederBuddy suggest or start the series when a buyer reserves a puppy.

# Email Series and the Go-home Series

> **Video walkthrough:** [Watch on Loom](#) *(link coming soon)*

***

A series is a set of emails that go out on a schedule, timed to each buyer's own go-home day. Write it once, add a buyer, and the right email reaches them at the right time: six weeks out, two weeks out, the day they bring the puppy home, two weeks after. The **Go-home series** is written for you; you change the words and add buyers.

***

## What You Can Do Here

* Turn on a ready-made seven-email Go-home series in one click
* Change the words, the timing, or add and remove emails
* Add buyers from a litter, a waitlist, your applicants, past buyers, or one at a time
* Give each buyer their own go-home date, and move it when plans change
* Let BreederBuddy prompt you, or start the series on its own, when a buyer reserves a puppy
* Pause a buyer, pause the whole series, or take someone out
* See exactly which email each buyer has received, and what's coming next

## How It Works

Go to [**Communications**](https://app.breederbuddy.com/communications), click the [**Campaigns**](https://app.breederbuddy.com/communications?tab=campaigns) tab, and make sure **Series** is selected at the top. Before a series can send, your sending domain and business address need to be in place; the [Campaigns](https://breederbuddy.com/docs/features/contacts-communication/campaigns.md) article walks through both.

### Start with the Go-home series

1. Click **Go-home series** (the card marked **New**). You'll see all seven emails, each with its timing: **6 weeks before go-home**, **4 weeks before**, **2 weeks before**, **1 week before**, **on go-home day**, **3 days after** and **2 weeks after**.
2. Click any email to open it. Change the words freely; the greeting and the puppy's name fill in for each buyer automatically.
3. Change **When it goes out** on any email, for example **3 weeks before go-home**. Click **Add an email** for another one, or **Remove this email** for one you don't need.
4. Choose **How buyers join** (more on this below), then click **Create series**. You land on the series page with an empty buyer list.

The Go-home series is one of five starting points. Beside it: **Puppy updates while waiting** (three photo-and-progress notes before go-home day), the **Puppy-raising course** (four short lessons across the first month home), **First-year check-ins** (one month, three months, six months, first birthday), and **Guardian home check-ins** (settling in, health testing, breeding plans). Each opens in the editor with every email written; words in \[brackets] are cues to replace with your own. Click **New Series** at any time to pick another, or **Start from a blank series** for your own sequence: anything with a date.

### Add buyers

Each buyer rides the series on their own go-home date, so adding buyers is really two things: who, and when.

1. On the series page, click **Add buyers**.
2. Pick where they come from: **A litter's buyers**, **A waitlist**, **Applicants**, **Past buyers**, **A contact type**, or search for one person under **Or one person**. You can combine these: pick a litter, come back and add a waitlist, then add one more person by name.
3. Check the **Go-home date** next to each buyer. For a litter with a birth date it's filled in from the litter's birth date plus your go-home age (set under **Settings → Preferences**). Dates marked **estimated** need a look. To give everyone the same date, set it once at the top and click **Apply**.
4. Under **Emails**, click **All 7** on a buyer to skip emails they shouldn't get, for example the shopping list for a repeat buyer.
5. Click **Add buyers**. Each buyer now has a row in the grid, one column per email, showing what has been sent and what's scheduled.

If a buyer's go-home day is already close or past, the emails they missed go out one at a time over the next day or so, rather than all at once.

### Let BreederBuddy start it for you

Every series has a setting called **How buyers join**, in the series editor:

* **Suggest it when a buyer reserves a puppy** (the usual choice). When you make a contact the owner of a puppy in a litter, BreederBuddy notices and offers the series: on the puppy's page, on the buyer's contact card, on the litter page, and on the **Communications** overview. One click opens **Start a series**, with the buyer and their estimated go-home date filled in. Click **Not for this buyer** and you won't be asked again for that puppy.
* **Start it automatically when a buyer reserves a puppy.** No prompt. The buyer is added within a few minutes and the activity feed shows it.
* **Only when I add buyers myself.** No prompts for this series.

A buyer "reserves a puppy" the moment you make them the owner of a puppy in a litter, whichever way you do it: on the puppy's profile, in the litter's puppy list, or when a contract or sale sets the owner. If you later change that puppy's owner, the series stops for the old owner and you'll see a note in your activity feed.

Not every owner is a buyer, and BreederBuddy goes by the contact's type. A **Guardian Family** is suggested with a **Guardian home** label, so you decide; they are never started automatically. A **Breeder** or **Business** contact is never treated as a reservation, so no prompt appears when a puppy goes to a partner breeder or a co-owner.

### Pause, change a date, or remove someone

On the series page:

* Change a buyer's **Go-home** date right in the grid. Their remaining emails move with it.
* Click **Pause** on a buyer's row to hold their emails, and **Resume** to continue. Nothing is skipped; held emails go out again from where they were.
* Click **Remove** to take a buyer out. Emails not sent yet won't go out. If you add them back later, emails they already received are not sent twice.
* Click **Pause** at the top to hold the whole series, for every buyer, until you click **Resume**.
* Click **Edit emails** to change words or timing. Word changes apply to every email not sent yet. Timing changes move every scheduled email to the new time.

### What buyers see

Each email arrives from your sending domain with your kennel name, the buyer's first name, the puppy's name and the go-home date filled in. The footer carries your business address and an unsubscribe link. When a buyer replies, the reply lands on your **Inbox** tab, attached to their contact record.

## Key Terms

| Term | What It Means |
| - | - |
| Go-home date | The day a buyer brings their puppy home. Each buyer has their own; every email in the series is timed from it. |
| Go-home age | Your usual age for puppies going home, in weeks, under **Settings → Preferences**. Used to estimate go-home dates from a litter's birth date. |
| Rider | A buyer who is currently on a series. |
| Reserves a puppy | A contact becomes the owner of a puppy in a litter. This is what triggers the series prompt. |

## Tips & Common Questions

> **What happens if the go-home date changes?**
>
> Change it in the grid on the series page, or on the buyer's row. Every email not yet sent moves to match the new date. Emails already sent stay sent.

> **The litter doesn't have a birth date yet. Can I still add buyers?**
>
> Yes. The date shows as **estimated** with a placeholder; set the real date on each buyer before you click **Add buyers**, or set one date for all of them at the top. The prompts that start a series on their own only appear once the litter has a birth date, because that's what the go-home date is counted from.

> **Can one buyer be on two series at once?**
>
> Yes, for example the Go-home series and a puppy-raising course. A buyer can only be on each series once, even if they're taking home two puppies from the same litter.

> **I added a buyer late and three emails were already due. Do they get all three at once?**
>
> No. The missed emails go out one at a time, the first within about an hour and the rest a day apart, so nobody gets five emails in one minute.

> **Why is the series on hold?**
>
> The series page tells you at the top. Usually it's one of three things: your sending domain isn't verified yet, your business address is missing from **Settings → Preferences**, or you've reached this month's sending limit. Held emails go out as soon as the reason is fixed.

> **Can I see the series from the buyer's contact?**
>
> Yes. The **At a Glance** band on the contact's profile shows which series they're on and when the next email goes out. Click it to open the series.
