# Two-Factor Authentication

> Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) for your BreederBuddy login with a text message verification code. How to enable or remove 2FA, what to do if the code doesn't arrive, you changed phone numbers, or your email isn't verified.

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) adds a second check at login: after you type your password, BreederBuddy texts a 6-digit code to your phone. Even if someone learns your password, they can't sign in without your phone — a simple way to keep your kennel's records safe.

## What You Can Do Here

* Turn on SMS-based two-factor authentication for your account
* Use any US or international mobile number
* Sign in with both your password and a one-time text code
* Turn 2FA off if you change phones or no longer need it

***

## How It Works

### Turning 2FA On

1. Open [**Settings → Two-Factor Auth**](https://app.breederbuddy.com/settings?tab=two-factor%20auth) (under the **Account** group). You'll see **Two-factor authentication is off**.
2. Click **Enable two-factor authentication**.
3. Enter your mobile number under **Phone number**. US numbers work as-is. For international numbers, include the country code (e.g., +44 for the UK).
4. Click **Send code**. A 6-digit code arrives by text.
5. Type the code and click **Verify and enable**. The tab now shows **Two-factor authentication is on** and the number codes are sent to.

For security, BreederBuddy may ask you to confirm it's you before sending the code — enter **Your password** and click **Confirm**, or click **Verify with Google** if you sign in with Google. Typed the wrong number? Click **Wrong number? Go back**.

### Signing In with 2FA On

1. Enter your email and password as usual.
2. BreederBuddy texts a 6-digit code to your phone.
3. Type it into **Verification code** and click **Verify and sign in**.

### Turning 2FA Off

1. Go back to **Settings → Two-Factor Auth**.
2. Click **Remove two-factor authentication**. No code is needed to turn it off. The tab shows **Two-factor authentication is off** again.

## Tips & Common Questions

> **What if I don't get the text?**
>
> Give it a minute, then double-check the phone number (and country code if you're outside the US). When setting up, click **Wrong number? Go back** to fix the number and send a new code. When signing in, click **Back to sign in** and sign in again to get a fresh code. If it still doesn't arrive, reach out through the chat in the bottom right and we can help.

> **My email isn't verified — can I still turn on 2FA?**
>
> You need to verify your email first. Click **Send verification email**, click the link in the email, then come back and click **I've verified — check now** to continue.

> **What if I lose access to my phone?**
>
> There are no backup recovery codes yet, so if you change your number you should turn 2FA off first, then turn it back on with the new number. If you've already lost access, reach out to support and we'll help you get back in.

> **Does 2FA cost anything?**
>
> No — it's included with every BreederBuddy account. Standard text message rates from your carrier may apply.
